Hello, everyone! Welcome to the first KKB History post of 2022. Today, we’ll be going over some interesting site statistics and achievements from 2021. Let’s get to it!

KKB History #18: Statistics and overview of 2021 — Written by Martin

Before I go over the site’s statistics, how about a general overview of the year? It seems 2021 was a much calmer period for Kiri Kiri Basara, as we had less groundbreaking news to cover and reviews to write compared to 2020. Our main focus in 2021 was covering the news as it happened—though, as mentioned in the last KKB History post, we plan to also produce more original content this year where possible.

Some highlights of 2021: our second interview with CINEPRESTO for one, and our publication of more SciADV series guides. Of course, there were also plenty of Steins;Gate collaborations to cover throughout the year. Toward the end of 2021, we also reviewed the Steins;Gate Complete Manga, as well as Steins;Gate 0 volume 1 and volume 2, courtesy of the folks at UDON Entertainment.

Another highlight of the year was our release of the KKB Promo Video, which marked the launch of our YouTube channel. While we received a lot of helpful feedback and support from you guys, we unfortunately weren’t able to continue producing content for the channel. Still, we absolutely hope to be able to produce more original content in 2022, both on KKB and on our YouTube channel.

Now, with the overview out of the way, let’s get into some juicy statistics.

In 2021, we saw a total of 372,618 site visits—this was nearly 50,000 more visits than we received in 2020. Our single-day visit record was 13,612 visits, on March 11. That day, we published two articles: one about a mysterious Steins;Gate-related teaser on Twitter, and the other being a rumor about an Anonymous;Code anime adaptation. Though we weren’t able to beat 2020’s single-day visit record, we’ll see how things go in 2022!

In terms of new and returning visitors, we found that 82.6% of our visitors were newcomers—I personally found this fascinating, given that the site is 4 years old and still attracting quite a few new readers. The remaining 17.4% were returning visitors, having visited the site before.

Each visitor to the site visited, on average, 2.7 pages per session and spent an average of 1 minute and 23 seconds on the site.

Let’s look at our most-visited articles. As with 2020, our most popular articles were our two Robotics;Notes guides. Though the more popular guide in 2020 was the route guide, the 100% guide took that spot in 2021. Perhaps we had some replayers going for 100% completion the second time around. Anyway, here are the top ten most-visited articles of the year:

  1. Robotics;Notes Elite 100% Guide — 51,738 visits
  2. Robotics;Notes Elite Route Guide — 45,989 visits
  3. Robotics;Notes DaSH Guide — 27,251 visits
  4. Steins;Gate Elite Guide — 25,305 visits
  5. How to buy Chaos;Head and play it in English — 19,651 visits
  6. Mysterious, official Steins;Gate-related teaser posted on Twitter — 14,068 visits
  7. Steins;Gate: My Darling’s Embrace 100% Guide — 9,356 visits
  8. Steins;Gate: The Complete Manga – Review — 8,317 visits
  9. Chaos;Child 100% Guide 7,634 visits
  10. Steins;Gate, Starlight Revue Re LIVE collaboration announced — 5,741 visits

It seems our visual novel guides have taken many of the top spots, particularly the Robotics;Notes guides. It’s great to see that the interest in these games is still strong, even over a year after their launch in the West.

Okay, let’s look at the statistics you guys voted for in our December Patreon poll. The most popular option—together with the “most-visited articles” option—was a look at country statistics; i.e., which countries accounted for the most site visits in 2021. Here are the top ten, including percentages for how much of the visitor-base they made up.

  1. United States — 40.1%
  2. United Kingdom — 6.8%
  3. Canada — 4.6%
  4. Germany — 3.1%
  5. Brazil — 2.68%
  6. Australia — 2.64%
  7. Italy — 2.57%
  8. Russia — 2.56%
  9. India — 2.1%
  10. Philippines — 1.9%

The top two countries are no surprise—the USA and UK have always been at the top when it comes to visitors. This time around, though, Japan didn’t make the list; though they were ranked 4th in 2020, in 2021, they were ranked 15th. Another big surprise here was India’s position: though they were ranked 3rd previously, they’re in 9th now. Visits from Italy and Germany rose considerably, as well—in 2020, they accounted for less than 1% of the total.

Another Patreon-voted metric was the average age of our visitors. We found that 51% of visitors were between 18–24 years old; 34% were 25–34 years old; 8% were 35–44 years old. As age rises, it seems the visitor percentages get smaller. It’s probably safe to say that our content has best served those in their 20s and early 30s.

The final metric you guys voted on was sources of visits, e.g. Reddit, Twitter, Facebook, and so on. The list below will show the top five platforms, as the other sources accounted for very small percentages (less than 1%).

  1. Reddit — 62.8%
  2. Twitter — 26.9%
  3. Vkontakte — 4.1%
  4. Facebook — 3.3%
  5. YouTube — 2.2%

Once again, few surprises here. Reddit saw a 20% increase compared to 2020; Twitter was the platform that lost most of its percentage to Reddit, which is definitely interesting. Vkontakte rose by 2%, which can mostly be attributed to Lumisentius joining us to translate some of our articles into Russian. Facebook lost 3%, and YouTube pretty much stayed the same. One interesting fact I noticed was that 7 of our visits in 2021 came from Instagram stories. It seems we had a few people sharing our articles there.

And that just about covers everything for this KKB History post! I hope you found these statistics and insights as fascinating as I did. It’s always nice to see the performance of a website through a yearly lens, as this offers us valuable information on what people are interested in, how they find us, and so on.

As always, we are grateful for your continued support. If you have any questions or suggestions, feel free to contact us via email or our social media. Thank you very much, and see you next month with our February update!
