This guide provides a spoiler-free walkthrough for Steins;Gate: Variant Space Octet. This game’s story takes place after the true ending of Steins;Gate, so we highly recommend playing or watching Steins;Gate beforehand. We also highly recommend completing Chaos;Head NoAH, as Octet is closely connected to it.
Controls
Variant Space Octet is an 8-bit-style visual novel that uses period-accurate text commands to progress the story. This guide only covers the commands required to advance the story, but you are encouraged to experiment—many optional commands trigger bonus dialogue, jokes, or additional context.
A few directional commands can be seen on the game’s screen, like left, back, front, and right. These commands are used to move to another scene. The phone command can be used throughout the game to read humorous chuunibyou monologues from Okabe.
Pressing Shift reveals additional commands:
- load / save — Up to ten save slots are available.
- look — Examine characters, items, or the environment. If multiple objects are present, specify one (e.g., look poster).
- talk — Speak to characters. If more than one is on-screen, specify who (e.g., talk daru).
After the opening sequence at Akihabara Station, the assistant command is unlocked, allowing you to contact Kurisu anytime for hints or fun optional dialogue.
The game responds to many unofficial commands, such as hug, kiss, kick, kill, punch, and more. These are optional and mostly trigger comedic lines.
Walkthrough
After exiting the train with Nae, begin by entering talk, then move forward with down. Examine your surroundings using look poster, look can, and move can, then pick up the hidden item by typing take paper. Memorize the code on this paper, as you will need it later. Continue by entering take poster and returning to Nae with up. Give her the poster using give poster, then head back down and go left. Use give flashlight, followed by use flashlight. This ends the introduction, leading into the game’s 8-bit opening sequence.
You will now find yourself standing in front of Radi-Kan. Enter turn upa, then proceed with front. On the staircase, type wait four times until Moeka falls asleep, then continue upward with up.
In front of the time machine, collect the two available items by typing take shovel and take badge. After doing so, return to the staircase with down. From there, enter front and then button to access the keypad. Input the code you found earlier by typing push and add the code. If you do not remember the code, it is: 2405
When you are back on the main street, type in the assistant command twice, and then look sign, followed by the get x command. At the bridge, insert an item using insert cross, then proceed with front to reach Yanabayashi Shrine, where Lukako is waiting.
Here, enter take zigzag, then dig, and then type neidhardt. Optional commands like look and talk will provide additional dialogue. When you are finished, return to the bridge with back, go back again, then continue right until you reach the area beneath the railway overpass. Speak with Kurisu using the assistant command, then go back, then forward with front to arrive at the entrance to MayQueen.
In front of the café, type use light and then front to enter. Inside, when talking to Faris, type use zigzag, then assistant, and follow it with the neidhardt command.
When outside the café, type left and then look shop to approach it. Type give tudor. Go back and left to reach the entrance to the Future Gadget Lab, where Mayuri is waiting. Use give pocket, then neidhardt, and step inside with front.
At the door to the lab, type look, insert the Upa using insert upa, and unlock the door with turn upa. Enter with front. Inside the lab, speak to Daru using talk daru (and optionally Kurisu), then use neidhardt. Exit the lab with back.

Leave the lab by typing back. We will now need to move through several locations, so be sure to type these commands in correctly, as it is easy to get lost.
Move left, then back, then left twice, and finally up to reach Suzuha. After speaking to her, move down, then right, then back, then right, and finally left to return to Manseibashi Bridge. Contact Kurisu again with assistant, buy a sandwich with buy sandwich, and go back.
Type back, back, then front, and finally up to return to Suzuha. Give her the item by typing give sandwich, then move down to proceed.
Next, type in right, back, front, and up. You should be on the roof of Radi-Kan. Type hug Kurisu and then talk. After some dialogue, use think Neidhardt, where you’ll be prompted to type in the location of the IBN 5100.
If you followed the clues closely and have watched or played Steins;Gate before, it should be easy to figure out. If you need help, however, the location is coinlocker
At the next location, type assistant twice, then call daru, followed by dummy and phone.
Now you will need to type in the password for the IBN 5100. You can type assistant to talk to Kurisu for any hints. If you’ve played Chaos;Head before, it should not be too difficult to guess the password.
In case you need help, this is the password: fun^10*int^40=Ir2
