Per its store page, Juggernaut will be released for free at an unannounced future date and will feature campaign and free-for-all modes. An optional paid DLC, Juggernaut Assets Maker Pro, will allow players to create their own maps, items, objects, and so on.
MAGES. has provided the following breakdown of their use of artificial intelligence in the game’s development:
- Source code: 100%
- Graphics: 60%
- Sound: 50%
- Effects: 100%
Users across Twitter and the game’s Steam Community page have slammed the new announcement, calling the company’s significant use of AI in the project “pathetic,” “embarrassing,” and “despicable.” MAGES. has positioned Juggernaut as the latest project from the director of Maximum Pile-Up!, a food-stacking game the company describes as having been translated into ten languages using text-generation AI—another worrying decision given MAGES.’ already stormy history with localization quality.
Juggernaut represents another tumultuous step in MAGES.’ worrying experiments with AI in game development. In the visual novel sphere, the company has previously used artificial intelligence to visually upscale titles such as My Merry May with Be and, seemingly, Never7—the latter of which we criticized in our review for its especially inadequate visuals.
MAGES.’ most recent flagship release, Steins;Gate RE:BOOT, is apparently free from AI use per the Steam page’s lack of a use disclosure—but it remains to be seen if the company will, in the future, officially adopt its use in the development of the Science Adventure series or any other major release.
We will strive to keep you updated as more information arises on this upcoming release.
