While we were in Tokyo, we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to taste Skal, a drink featured prominently in Robotics;Notes. Skal is a lightly carbonated soft drink from the Japanese beverage company Asahi. It has a distinctive yogurt-like flavor, similar to drinks such as Calpis, but with added carbonation, giving it a sweet, creamy, and slightly tangy taste. It’s also Aki’s favorite drink in Robotics;Notes.
If you want to see my first reaction to tasting the drink, and where to find bottles of Skal, check out the following video.
Skal is definitely not for everyone. It tastes a bit like leftover Sprite mixed with milk. That “leftover” impression likely comes from the light carbonation, which makes it feel as if some of the fizz has already faded. Thankfully, it’s not overly sweet, unlike many other Japanese drinks we tried.
I’m still undecided on whether I liked it or not. Maybe it’s an acquired taste, similar to Kofola or other drinks. I’ll make sure to try it again on our next trips to Japan, whether to acquire the taste, or not.
