Revealed today via an interview with Game*Spark, MAGES. CEO and president Makoto Asada appears to be interested in releasing the upcoming remake of the first entry in the Memories Off series in English for Western audiences. This would mark the first time that the series, now over twenty-seven years old, reaches English-speaking players—if we discount the tenuously connected SINce Memories.
In the interview, Asada acknowledges having received requests from overseas players for the series be released in English, though he states that he didn’t think it would be right to simply translate the story text, insert it into the game, and send it off for a Western release. Rather, Asada felt it would be best to fully remake the first game and offer it to the Western market, positioning it as the series’s entry point and deciding future plans based on its reception.
The CEO explains that when it comes to the Memories Off series, the cost of localization for even one additional language is massive—but given it’s one of their longest-running series, his thought process is that the company ought to cover all possible bases. Hence, Asada intends for the Memories Off remake to receive meticiulous care and effort before it is offered to Western players.
This interview contains other discussion of past MAGES. projects and teasers for the future. A summary will be published on Kiri Kiri Basara in the near future.
