New SciADV projects are in development, Steins;Gate creators confirm

In a new interview with Famitsu, Steins;Gate producer Tatsuya Matsubara and scenario writer Naotaka Hayashi discussed the development of Steins;Gate RE, reflecting on the original game’s creation while also offering some tantalizing comments about what comes next for Science Adventure.

Most notably, when asked about future projects, including the mysterious Steins;?? title first announced back in 2020, the pair confirmed that work on new Science Adventure titles is moving forward.

Matsubara explained that while he cannot reveal details yet, preparations for new projects are steadily progressing, with series creator Chiyomaru Shikura involved. Hayashi has also been holding detailed scenario discussions with Shikura. Hayashi was similarly enthusiastic, stating that they are currently hard at work on new material. He added that the team has also discussed wanting to create projects beyond Steins;Gate, with various things currently being prepared.

Perhaps even more interestingly, Steins;Gate RE:BOOT itself seems to have been conceived with those future projects in mind. According to Matsubara, the idea began after reconnecting with original character designer huke several years ago. In May 2023, huke independently shared an illustration showing how he would draw Kurisu in his modern art style. Matsubara was impressed by the new look and began discussing the possibility of renewing the characters. Rather than simply updating the artwork, Matsubara began considering an overhaul of the game’s graphics and other elements that could also serve as a way to restart the Science Adventure series and connect it to future developments.

The remake also reflects how the characters have evolved since the original game. Hayashi explained that the team reviewed the script with their modern portrayals in mind, softening some of Kurisu’s harsher dialogue and adjusting Mayuri’s speaking rhythm to better match later adaptations. Kurisu voice actress Asami Imai described a similar approach in a separate Famitsu interview, saying that she based her new performance more on the Kurisu she developed through the anime than simply recreating her 2009 portrayal.

Hayashi also revealed that the team briefly joked about adding a harem ending to Steins;Gate RE:BOOT before deciding it would clash too much with the game’s tone. Instead, they turned to a longstanding fan request: a proper Moeka ending. Rather than simply adapting the original Gamma drama CD, the team rebuilt it as a genuine branch from the main story, resulting in a darker and more substantial conclusion for Okabe and Moeka.

Taken together, Famitsu’s interviews with the developers and Asami Imai paint an interesting picture of Steins;Gate RE:BOOT, a project shaped by nearly 17 years of accumulated history, but also one intended to help move Science Adventure forward. While we still don’t know exactly what MAGES. has planned next or when the long-awaited Steins;?? will finally resurface, the developers have made one thing clear: there is more Science Adventure on the way.
