Steins;Gate RE:BOOT Console Review: Mad Science Revived

Steins;Gate RE:BOOT has finally completed its journey to consoles. Following its PC release in August, the remake will soon be available on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and Xbox Series X|S, bringing its new take on the classic Science Adventure story to an entirely different set of platforms. So how exactly does RE:BOOT fare on consoles?

If you’re interested in an in-depth look at the game’s content, including our thoughts on the story and localization, we recommend checking out our original review of the PC release. This time, we’re turning our attention to the console releases, their performance, controls, presentation, and how they compare to the PC version. As usual, you can either watch our video review or read the article below.

If you’ve already played Steins;Gate RE:BOOT on PC, the PS5 version won’t offer many surprises. The game itself is essentially identical here, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. One of the most encouraging aspects of the console release is just how consistent the experience is across platforms. Despite the console versions arriving a month after the PC release, RE:BOOT looks and feels remarkably similar to its Steam counterpart, with no major compromises made for the port to new consoles.

On PS5, the game looks particularly impressive when played on a 4K television. The remake’s detailed backgrounds benefit greatly from a larger, high-definition display, and the crisp presentation makes it easy to appreciate just how much work went into rebuilding Akihabara and the other locations in Steins;Gate. The game also runs smoothly; we encountered no stutters or animation issues throughout our experience. Additionally, we didn’t encounter any of the crashes that occasionally interrupted our PC playthrough on PS5.

Unfortunately, the strange text-rendering issue we pointed out in our original review is still present, with some text appearing noticeably compressed on screen. Considering that the console versions were delayed by an additional month compared to PC, we’re puzzled that this relatively visible issue remains unresolved. It doesn’t make the game difficult to play, but it is certainly something we would have expected to see addressed before release.

The game itself controls very well with the DualSense controller. Navigating menus, advancing through text, and interacting with the various options all feel natural, and RE:BOOT is arguably a better fit for a controller than a mouse and keyboard. One particularly odd UI quirk is the empty space in the pause menu where the PC version’s “Fullscreen” option would normally appear. Since this option isn’t needed on PS5, the space serves no purpose, yet the menu items below it haven’t been shifted up to fill the gap.

Overall, the PS5 version is a very polished way to experience Steins;Gate RE:BOOT. It retains the strengths of the PC release while avoiding some of the technical problems we encountered there. Aside from the lingering text-rendering issue, there is little here to complain about—and experiencing the remake’s beautifully detailed backgrounds on a 4K television is arguably one of the best ways to appreciate its new presentation.

The Nintendo Switch version of Steins;Gate RE:BOOT is just as polished as its PS5 counterpart, delivering a smooth and consistent experience on Nintendo’s hybrid console. The same text-rendering issue that we encountered on PC and PS5 is present here, alongside the oddly staggered menu items. However, these issues do little to detract from the overall experience, and the game’s font remains perfectly readable even on the Switch’s smaller screen. Even email text, despite being particularly small, is legible enough to read comfortably.

One area where the Nintendo Switch version struggles is in TV mode, particularly when playing on a large 4K television. The visuals can look noticeably blurry here, with the menus, characters, and backgrounds losing some of their sharpness. While this is far from a deal-breaker, the difference is noticeable on a larger screen. Thankfully, this isn’t an issue when playing in handheld mode, where the game looks considerably better suited to the Switch’s built-in display. As a note, we only tested the original Nintendo Switch edition of the game during the review period, so we cannot comment on how the game looks on Switch 2.

RE:BOOT’s performance on Switch is also very solid. The animations play out smoothly, and we didn’t encounter any crashes during our time with the game. The only noticeable stuttering occurs when fast-forwarding through text—ultimately a rather minor issue in the grand scheme of things. An omission worth mentioning is the lack of touchscreen support, which would have been a welcome addition for a visual novel on a handheld console. Still, navigating the game with the Joy-Con controllers works well enough, and the overall experience remains enjoyable both in handheld and docked modes.

Ultimately, the Nintendo Switch version is a perfectly viable way to experience Steins;Gate RE:BOOT. While it retains some of the same minor flaws found in the other versions, its smooth performance and readable text make it an excellent option for those who prefer playing visual novels on the go.

Ultimately, Steins;Gate RE:BOOT delivers a consistent experience across PC, PS5, and Nintendo Switch, the console versions retaining the strengths of the PC Steam release while avoiding some of the technical issues we encountered there. Although a few lingering problems remain, the console versions are great ways to experience the remake, especially if you prefer playing on a television or taking your visual novels on the go. Whether you’re returning to the Future Gadget Lab after a long reprieve or experiencing the adventure for the first time, Steins;Gate RE:BOOT arrives on October 29, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and Xbox Series X|S.
